For many years, I wouldn't be so happy if the power went off while my
computer was on. But now I fear no more with the APC Back-UPS 500.

What it is: The unit is actually a SPS with UPS-like performance. Its switch
time is 4 milliseconds, which is fast enough to keep my computer on. Normally
my computer would take more than one-tenth of a second to power down after
hitting the switch.

Not only does this UPS keep my computer on long enough to execute a safe
shutdown during long outages, it also offers surge-protection capabilities
through the AC and phone lines. It's a nice piece of equipment.

This just in: The UPS battery failed earlier than I thought it would, so
I'm going to need another battery. Darn.
